Galena's Tree Lighting Is Set to Be the First Night on the Rebuilt Square

The southwest corner of Galena's Village Square has a new curb shape this fall. The sidewalk now bumps out into the street, and a new crosswalk leads to it. T Crete has also put new sidewalks around the whole edge of the Square. The Village of Galena's 2026 projects page lists both as installed, and it describes the bump-out as traffic calming that improves ADA accessibility.

The Square is finished. The streets around it are on deadlines, and every one of those deadlines falls just before Sunday, December 6. That night the Village holds its Christmas Tree Lighting on Galena Square from 6 to 8 p.m., with stories, songs and Santa. If the schedule holds, the tree lighting will be the first village gathering of the winter on new pavement, new sidewalks and new parking within a short walk of the tree.

Every Deadline Lands Before December 6

Here is the Village's own schedule in date order. The Village notes that every date depends on weather, material availability and construction conditions.

  1. Monday, November 2: South Walnut Street is scheduled to close between Columbus Street and Front Street for one week, depending on weather.
  2. November 15: Target for Walnut Street resurfacing, sidewalks and parking, and the completion date for the Columbus Street paving and crosswalk.
  3. November: Target for widening and resurfacing the Miller Park trail.
  4. Thanksgiving, November 26: Target for the Holmes Street widening and resurfacing, and for Phase II of the Miller Park Pavilion.
  5. End of November: Target for the Miller Park driveway and parking lot.
  6. December: Target for the new ADA-accessible entrance at Village Hall.

That puts three weeks between the November 15 street deadline and the tree lighting, and ten days between Thanksgiving and December 6. Only the Village Hall entrance is scheduled for the same month as the tree lighting.

Brightspeed's aerial fiber work is also running through the village this season. The contractor is Triple D Communications, and the Village says the installation is planned to finish by the end of fall. That puts fiber crews on village poles during the same weeks as the paving crews.

Columbus Street Is Where the Evening Ends

Most of the paving is concentrated on Columbus Street. Chemcote/CTL started there in October, putting down heavy-duty pavement, building a raised crosswalk in the middle of the block and adding new striping, with completion set for November 15. A raised crosswalk in the middle of a block slows traffic at the exact spot where people cross.

Columbus Street is also where the Village's business spotlight puts you after a cold hour on the Square. The Village homepage features three spots, all on Columbus Street:

  • Galena Diner, 13 Columbus St. The Village describes it as serving classic American comfort food for more than 20 years, from breakfast through family-style dinners, for dine-in or carryout.
  • The Coffee Vault, 9 W Columbus St. The Village calls it a coffee shop in a beautifully restored historic building, with seasonal drinks.
  • Son of Thurman, 31 W Columbus St. This fourth-generation family business brings the Thurman Café menu to the village: the Thurman Burger, the Thurmanator, subs, wings and sandwiches, with a family history going back to 1942.

The new crosswalk on Columbus Street and the new crosswalk at the Square's southwest corner are only a short walk apart. Together they connect the tree to the diner, the coffee shop and the burger counter.

Walnut Street Is the Parking Answer

Parking is the hardest part of any evening on a small village square. On paper, the Walnut Street project goes straight at that problem.

On North Walnut, the parking area is being paved and striped. That adds several parking spaces and a new ADA-accessible sidewalk. On South Walnut, McB and Sands Decker are moving the guardrail so the street can have properly designed, paved and striped parking spaces. The street is also being widened and given a new sidewalk. The Village is also replacing a stormwater catch basin and resurfacing the street. The target is November 15.

The one-week South Walnut closure that began November 2 is part of this same work. The Village's closure notice covers the stretch from Columbus Street to Front Street and lists sidewalk, street-width and parking work. The Village posts timing updates as the work moves along, so check its site for the latest before you plan a route.

Holmes Street, also handled by McB and Sands Decker, is getting widened, resurfaced, restriped and repaired as needed, with completion planned by Thanksgiving. Crews will also repair damaged pavement at spots across the village.

North Walnut Leads to Miller Park, and Miller Park Is Mid-Build

Follow Walnut Street north and you reach Miller Park at 286 N Walnut St. When the Village announced the pavilion project in September 2025, it described the structure as a community venue for events, recreation and gatherings.

The park is getting three upgrades at once this month:

  • The pavilion. Phase I was completed earlier in 2026. Phase II covers restrooms, electrical work, concrete and stonework, and it is planned for completion by Thanksgiving.
  • The trail. It is being widened and resurfaced, with a November target. Preservation Parks of Delaware County is funding it, not the Village.
  • The driveway and lot. Chemcote/CTL, the same contractor working on Columbus Street, is paving the driveway, expanding and paving the parking area and adding striping by the end of November.

The pavilion will still not be finished after Thanksgiving. Phase III, which covers painting, trim, signage and landscaping, is planned for 2028. If the November targets hold, the park gets restrooms, electrical work, a wider trail and a paved lot this year, and the painting, trim, signage and landscaping in 2028.

If you walk the Hoover Reservoir edge in fall, our earlier piece on how the drawdown shapes Galena's fall pairs well with a Miller Park loop once the new trail surface is down.

The Saturday Before the Street Deadline

One day before the November 15 street target, the holiday season starts a few miles from the Square. On Saturday, November 14, Ethos + Co. Cafe at 6576 Africa Rd. hosts its third annual Holiday Vendor Market from 8 a.m. to noon. About 40 local vendors will set up inside the cafe and outdoors.

The cafe stays open during the market, but smoothies and acai bowls are off the menu that morning and indoor seating is closed for vendor space. It is also the first day of the cafe's new holiday drink menu.

The two dates bookend the holiday season: a vendor market on Africa Road on November 14, then the Square on December 6. Most of the downtown deadlines fall between them.

December 6 on the Square, December 16 at Village Hall

The tree lighting is the event all of this work leads up to. It runs Sunday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Galena Square. The Village describes it as a traditional village Christmas program with stories, songs and Santa, and a downloadable flyer is posted on the event page.

Ten days later, attention moves to Village Hall at 109 Harrison St. That building is the site of the last project on the 2026 list. T Crete and Lawn Masters are building a new ADA-accessible entrance there, with a December target. On Wednesday, December 16, at about 7 p.m., Village Hall hosts a public hearing on the proposed annexation and development of the former Blackhawk Golf Course at 8830 Dustin Rd. The proposal is from Romanelli & Hughes. The hearing has been postponed several times before landing on this date. The Village's event page carries the notice for anyone who wants to attend.

I love watching Galena's village core take shape, and I'm happy to share what I'm seeing on the ground.
